Savanna & Derek’s Colorado Hiking Elopement

As an elopement photographer team, we’ve seen our fair share of beautiful love stories, but Savanna and Derek’s Colorado hiking elopement was something special. These two knew they wanted a wedding day that was as adventurous as their love, and boy, did they deliver!

Sunset Hiking Elopement in Colorado

When Savanna and Derek first reached out to us, they already had a great idea of what they wanted to do for their wedding day. Knowing that a traditional wedding wasn’t for them, they wanted a day that was adventurous, fun, and allowed them to spend the day focusing on one another and not worrying about minute details. They are both avid hikers and nature enthusiasts, so it was only natural that they chose to exchange vows in the heart of the Colorado wilderness. Their chosen spot? A gorgeous alpine lake, nestled high in the mountains!

Their Colorado hiking elopement started with a stunning 3-mile hike into the mountains to reach the alpine lake where they planned to share their vows. With two of their closest friends in tow, they set out on the trail, ready for whatever the day had in store. The forecast called for thunderstorms, but Savanna and Derek weren’t about to let a little rain spoil their day, so we all stayed optimistic and ready for whatever happened!

The hike up was full of laughter, excitement, and storytelling; which in our opinion, is the best way to kick off a wedding celebration!

Ceremony at Alpine Lake

When we reached the summit, everyone took a few minutes to relax and soak in the views. Savanna, Derek, and their friends sat on rocks lining the lake, shared snacks, and took a breath before getting ready for the ceremony. Despite the forecasted storms, the weather held out, providing Savanna and Derek with a picture-perfect day!

After exploring the lake to find the perfect ceremony spot, Savanna and Derek found a natural changing room to get into their wedding attire. Helping each other get ready, they looked out over the mountain and lake. Savanna wore a stunning black wedding dress that perfectly complemented the landscape! While Savanna and Derek changed, their two best friends and bridal party, got dressed up into their purple and blue bridesmaid gowns.

As the sun began to set, they headed to their chosen ceremony spot on the edge of the alpine lake. With their friends as witnesses, they exchanged heartfelt vows surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Summit Beer Reception

After the ceremony, it was time to celebrate! They cracked open summit beers and enjoyed some granola bars, toasting their love and the incredible adventure they just had. They had the alpine lake almost entirely to themselves during their whole wedding celebration, with only a few other hikers passing by that shared in the celebration!

As the sun was quickly starting to set, they started their descent, this time staying in their wedding attire, and headed back towards the trailhead. It was a magical end to a perfect day, filled with love, laughter, and the beauty of the Colorado wilderness.

Helpful Tips for Planning Your Own Colorado Hiking Elopement

  1. Choose the Right Location: Select a trail that matches your hiking experience and fitness level. Consider the distance, elevation gain, and terrain to ensure a safe and enjoyable hike on your wedding day. If you’re looking for someone who can help you find the perfect spot for your Colorado elopement, we’d love to help!
  2. Check the Weather: Colorado weather can be unpredictable, so be sure to check the forecast leading up to your elopement. Consider having a backup plan or flexible timeline in case of inclement weather.
  3. Bring Essentials: Don’t forget to pack essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, a first aid kit, and a headlamp or flashlight for hiking in low light.
  4. Notify Others: Let someone know your planned hiking route and estimated return time for safety reasons. Consider hiring an elopement photographer familiar with the area who can help you plan planning and timing.
  5. Leave No Trace: Respect the environment by packing out all trash, staying on designated trails, and following Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of Colorado’s wilderness.
